1 SCALE
What is a scale? A scale shows the relationship between a distance measured on a map and the actual distance
it represents on the ground.
Map Type Standard Scale Meaning / Conversion Method
Orthophoto Map 1 : 10 000 1 cm on map = 10 000 cm (0.1 km / 100 m) on ground
Topographic Map 1 : 50 000 1 cm on map = 50 000 cm (0.5 km / 500 m) on ground
💡 Exam Tip: Always check the type of map before starting your calculation!

, 2 AREA CALCULATION
Formula: Area = Length × Breadth
1. Measure the length and breadth on the map in centimetres.
2. Convert each measurement according to the map scale.
3. Multiply the converted length by the converted breadth.
4. Give your final answer in km².
💡 Exam Tip: The length is generally the longest side.
ORTHOPHOTO MAP EXAMPLE TOPOGRAPHIC MAP EXAMPLE
Question: Calculate area if Length = 4 cm, Question: Calculate area if Length = 4 cm,
Breadth = 2.5 cm. Breadth = 2.5 cm.
(Use 0.1 to convert cm to km) (Use 0.5 to convert cm to km)
Step 1: 4 cm × 0.1 = 0.4 km Step 1: 4 cm × 0.5 = 2 km
Step 2: 2.5 cm × 0.1 = 0.25 km Step 2: 2.5 cm × 0.5 = 1.25 km
Step 3: 0.4 km × 0.25 km = 0.1 km² Step 3: 2 km × 1.25 km = 2.5 km²
ANSWER: 0.1 km² ANSWER: 2.5 km²
3 ACTUAL DISTANCE CALCULATION
Actual Distance = Map Distance × Map Scale Factor
WORKED EXAMPLE
Calculate the actual distance across a field if it measures 13.0 cm on the map (answer in metres).
13.0 cm × 100 = 1 300 m
ANSWER: 1 300 m
💡 Remember: If the question requires your answer in metres, make sure your final answer is converted to metres!
