1. It is important that Will had an opportunity to practice and explore the different
overlays on his own time. Additionally, given how much of his 45 Sequenced overlay
was customized, it took a long time to replicate the customizations in the new 84
Sequenced overlay. By having access to both overlays, Will was able to switch back
and forth between his familiar and new vocabulary as needed.
2. It was important that the AAC tools changed over time because Will changed over
time. He was offered AAC at a very young age. As he progressed through his grades at
school, so did his cognitive and linguistic skills advance. For his AAC to be effective and
efficient it needed to change to meet his changing needs.
3. It is reported that Will’s family loves to entertain, laugh and connect with one another.
It was important to them that Will be able to do that too. This likely served as some of
the motivation behind getting Will AAC and implementing it. Additionally, it likely
influenced what vocabulary was programmed and where.
