Health and safety are an important and crucial part of working in a laboratory, as anything
could happen at any given moment, which is why we need to take safety precautions to
minimize the risk of anything happening in the foreseeable future.
Of course, like in any other situation of an individual’s life, we need to evaluate the advantages
and disadvantages of following health and safety protocols in the workplace.
Advantages
1. Enhanced safety: health and safety protocols promote a safer workplace, decreasing
the chance of accidents and injuries. Employees in the workplace consequently feel
secure and confident, leading to higher morale and productivity.
2. Healthier workforce: Putting health and safety protocols into practice encourages
employees to have much better physical and emotional health. A healthier workforce
is easier to achieve by managing stress initiatives and routine examinations.
3. Increased efficiency: following health and safety protocols reduces sickness or
accident-related downtime, boosting the total productivity of the workforce.
Absenteeism drops when workers feel secure and well, which improves operations.
Disadvantages
1. Cost implications: Some organizations, especially small enterprises, may find it
financially burdensome to implement full OHS procedures. Budgets may be strained
by the expense of compliance, equipment, and training.
2. Resistance to change: Employee resistance to new safety procedures may arise from
their familiarity with outdated procedures. The efficient use of OHS principles may be
hampered by this opposition.
3. Complexity in implementation: OSHA standards might be difficult to apply in some
industries because of the complexity of their work. It can be challenging to find flexible
solutions that work in their surroundings.
Health and Safety Regulation
The UK currently has health and safety regulations. These are: Health and Safety at Work Act,
RIDDOR, COSHH, Factories Act, Fire Regulations Act.
Health and Safety at Work Act
The Health and Safety at Work Act was established in 1974. It is the primary piece of legislation
covering occupational health and safety in GB. The act defines everyone’s general duties; this
includes employers, employees, managers, owners and so on. Just to give a brief overview of
this act, the Act of Parliament requires that workplaces provide adequate training of staff to
ensure that all the health and safety procedures are understood and applied when needed.
, RIDDOR
RIDDOR is the Act of Reporting of Injuries, Diseases, and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations,
that is also a health and safety legislation. This Act was recently updated in 2013. This act is
required to be executed in every workplace, and all employers will be held accountable, like
the self-employed, and people who are in control of workplaces with anything that could
involve a potential danger and a risk of death or any major injuries. There are also specific
requirement and regulations for gas related incidents. RIDDOR allows enforcing authorities to
monitor accident trends and to investigate further on serious accidents.
COSHH
COSHH is the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. This act was first introduced in 1889
and was recently renewed in 2022. The substances can range from mild irritants to high-risk
chemicals. It covers substances like cleaning substances, paint and inks, and other materials
such as cement and wood dust. This act was introduced to protect employees and others from
harmful exposure to hazardous substances.
Factories Act
The 1833 Factory Act was a significant legislation aimed at regulating factory conditions in
the UK, aimed at improving the working conditions of millworkers, including children. The
Act was passed by Parliament after parliamentary inquiry and a Royal Commission revealed
the abuse and mistreatment of children in factories. It required no children under nine to
work in factories, a maximum working week of 48 hours for those aged 9 to 13, and 12
hours daily for those aged 13 to 18. The Act also required children under 13 to receive two
hours of elementary schooling daily. Despite being too small to enforce the Act in 4,000
mills, it marked the beginning of a system of government control.
Fire Regulations Act
The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 became operative on January 23, 2023, after being
added to the statute book on May 18, 2022. Most of the suggestions given to the government
in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 1 report that call for a change in the legislation are
implemented by the Regulations. As of January 23, 2023, all individuals in management of the
building, such as managing agents, as well as building owners, such as freeholders, were
expected to abide by the regulations. Any violation of the regulations is illegal if it puts one or
more relevant parties at risk of dying in a fire or suffering severe injuries, such as residents,
employees, or guests.
Benefits of Risk Assessment
There are five stages of evaluating risks. These are identifying the risks, analysing the risks,
evaluating, or ranking the risks, treating the risks, monitoring and reviewing the risks.
