QUESTION 1

Critically discuss how students opposed the Bantu Education Act of 1953 in 1976.

The Bantu Education Act of 1953 was introduced by the apartheid government as part of its
wider policy of racial segregation. The Act brought the education of Black South Africans
under stronger government control and created an education system that was different from
the one provided to white South Africans. The government claimed that Black education
had to be designed according to the supposed needs of Black people, but in practice the
system helped to maintain racial inequality. Black learners were given fewer opportunities
and were prepared mainly for the limited economic and social roles that the apartheid
government believed were appropriate for them (Christie 1985).

The Bantu Education system was therefore strongly opposed by many Black communities,
teachers and students. The problem was not simply that schools had fewer resources. The
entire purpose and organisation of the system were questioned. Black schools experienced
overcrowding, shortages of classrooms, inadequate learning materials and a lack of
resources when compared with white schools. The curriculum was also seen as restrictive
because it did not provide Black learners with the same opportunities to develop
academically and professionally. Education was being used as part of a wider system that
treated people differently according to race (Kallaway 2002).

By the 1970s, students had become increasingly politically conscious. Young people were
influenced by the ideas of the Black Consciousness Movement, which encouraged Black
South Africans to reject feelings of inferiority created by apartheid. Black Consciousness
encouraged students to take pride in their identity and to believe that they had the ability to
challenge the system that oppressed them. Student organisations played an important role
in spreading these ideas and organising resistance in schools (Hirson 1979).
