What is the definition of a crime
A crime is generally defined as: a public wrong against society that is considered deserving of
punishment rather than financial compensation through civil law.
Why do we criminalise certain behaviour?
- The main goal of criminalisation is to protect society by discouraging harmful or dangerous
behaviour through punishment.
- Criminal liability is also imposed to punish individuals who cause harm or loss to people or
property.
- Criminal law often reflects society's beliefs and values about what should be considered
criminal at a particular time. Example: lowering the age of consent for homosexual persons.
