Question:
1. objectives (goals)
Answer:
Understand selecting the proper sequence of fitness assessments. Present information on how to perform
basic health-related physical fitness assessments common to the field of personal training. These include
the following: Resting heart rate and blood pressure Body composition: height, weight, body mass index,
circumferences (waist and hip), skinfolds, and bioelectrical impedance Cardiovascular: field tests, step
tests, and submaximal cycle ergometer tests Muscular fitness (muscular strength and muscular endurance):
one repetition maximum (1-RM) chest press, partial curl-up, push-up Flexibility: sit-and-reach tests
Question:
2. Introduction
Answer:
The assessment process can be extremely intimidating to clients, especially to those who are self-conscious
about their appearance and intimidated by the idea of joining a fitness facility. As their Personal Trainer, it
is important that you make your clients feel as comfortable as possible in the assessment process. During
this process, share with your clients what you will be doing and how this will be accomplished. Clients
may feel uncomfortable during certain parts of the assessment, such as during the weight assessment,
measurement of waist circumference, and/or skinfold assessment. For example, if a client is overweight
and a skinfold measurement at the abdomen site would be unsuccessful, do not attempt to take the
abdomen site measurement. If the client is apprehensive about any part of the assessment process, let him
or her know he or she can terminate the assessment at any time. Explain to the client the importance of
accurately recording the measurements. If this explanation does not alleviate the client's anxiety, record
any modifications to the measurement/assessment process for future reference. The success of the Personal
Trainer-client relationship is built on a foundation of respect for the client. Respect can be established by
providing information about the assessment process, listening to and addressing the client's concerns, and
demonstrating competence in the assessment procedures. The Personal Trainer should guide the selection
of the assessments (in consultation with the client) and the sequence of these assessments.
