Question 1

Historical evidence allows us to understand the past. Historians use sources
(documents, videos, interviews, books, journals) to find information relating to the past.
If a source is able to answer questions we have of the past, it is then known as
evidence. Sources may be kept for a specific purpose; it may be preserved in tombs or
in libraries or the government or other people may destroy the sources. Using sources
in education allows educators to provide evidence to students about the past. For
example, in South Africa many of the apartheid books used in the education system
have been burned during protests at universities in the recent years. Another example is
we can use the journal of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who was living in Germany during
the holocaust. This will explain why people were so scared during that time or even
answer how did German soldiers treat the Jewish people.

Primary sources are recorded from when the event took place in history. These sources
can take form of words such as books and letters or journals. These sources can also
be physical evidence such as buildings, paintings, or artifacts. Another form of this
source can be visual such as photographs, paintings, and maps. Once these items are
found, they are preserved and protected in buildings such as libraires, museums and art
galleries. For many years, we have focused only on the written primary sources as our
evidence, but as technology has improved, historians have been able to focus on the
non-written sources. They can now study the architecture of buildings, the way paintings
and artifacts have been made, music and myths. For example, the unearthing of the
tombs in Egyptian pyramids has allowed historians to access new forms of primary
sources and they are able to analyse the rock art and artifacts found in the tombs.
Secondary sources are produced when historians study the primary sources and
publish their findings. Secondary sources allows students and other researchers an
opportunity to learn more about these primary sources as not everyone has access to
the original primary sources. We cannot always rely on the validity of these secondary
sources as the authors may not have had access to the primary sources. An example of

secondary sources are journals written about the history of South Africa. These journals
are primary sources that have been studied and their findings are published from a
different person in a different era.

Material sources and relics of the past: material sources are the things people leave
behind when they have passed on. These can include their remains and their items
such as their houses, their furniture, clothing, and accessories. Other items include
weapons, pots, money, roads, buildings which are known as artefacts. Archaeological
remains are items left behind that we can physically touch and see. Studying these
artefacts can unearth information about the past, including how people lived and the
state of their development during that time. When these artefacts are found, historians
are able to study the area in detail further and provide more information that was
previously unknown about the pat. For example, when they discovered the other tombs
in the pyramids of Giza, new types of artefacts were discovered such as pots, jewellery
and clothing in the tombs and tomb walls. Historians were able to identify the way in
which these Egyptians lived and how developed the Egyptians were as a society during
that era.

Oral sources are words in forms of stories that rely on the experiences of people from
the past. These stories are handed down from generation to generation- there is no
written documentation of this. The stories, folk tales and songs change as it is not told in
the exact same way from one generation to the next. Therefore, one would need to
interview a group of people with a variety of ages to find the true meaning of the oral
sources. Once these oral histories are written down, they become written sources. The
oral histories can also e voice recoded or be found in a video, but its true form is from
the mouth of the storyteller. This source is not accurate, as stories may change or be
exaggerated or underexaggerated depending on who is telling the story. Humans can
not remember every detail of history and some important details may be omitted when
the story is being told. On the other hand, oral history can contribute to the bigger
picture of history today. Hearing stories from the people who first experienced it may
allow historians to unearth a new part of the history that was overlooked or
undocumented. A good example of this is the folktales of the Soweto student protests
