Assignment 02A (Unique assignment number 747168)
Question: ‘The southern states of the Unites States of America had no choice but
to secede from the Union in 1860 as President Abraham Lincoln was about to
abolish slavery.’ Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer.
The battle of slavery between the North and the South was one that lasted until a new
president of the United States of America was elected. The Northern states did not
believe in the use of slave labor, whereas the Southern states were firm believers in this
practice. This country was known as a powerhouse as they were one of the main
drivers for the slave trade, especially the South. When Abraham Lincoln was elected
president of the United States of America in 1860, the Southern States knew they had
to leave the Union as this president believed slavery was an injustice and did not want
his country to be a part of it1. I believe that the decision made by the Southern States to
leave the Union was not only based on the election of Abraham Lincoln. The southern
states knew that the election of any Republican will cause chaos on their way of life and
that the slave trade was highly frowned upon by the Nothern states of the country.
Once President Lincoln was elected, the Southern states had seceded from the Union
in 1860. The Southern states knew that if a Republican candidate was elected, they
would have to leave the union. The decision to leave the union was not a spur of the
moment decision, as the states were discussion their future before Lincoln was elected
President. Abraham Lincoln was opposed to slavery and the southern states knew that
this would be a threat to the slave economy as in those times, it was heavily relied on.
When the United States of America gained their independence, the country was split
into two sections. The North utilized free labour to build their industrial areas, whereas
the south used slave labour for these purposes. It is clear to see that the Southern
States culture was based on the use of slaves and this may be the reason why they felt
threatened by a republican rule over the country. The Southern States believed that
disposing the slave trade will impact their way of life and their social systems 2. This did
