A&P II LAB
EXAM ONE
,Pancreas
Identify the roughly circular *islets of Langerhans, the endocrine portion of the pancreas (the
islets usually stain lighter than the surrounding cells). The islets are primarily composed of
alpha cells that produce glucagon, and beta cells that produce insulin.
,Thyroid
Note the spherical sacs (follicles) containing colloid. Stored thyroxin is attached to the protein colloid material
in the follicles as thyroglobulin and is released gradually to the blood. Note the walls of the follicle are formed
by simple cuboidal epithelial cells that synthesize the follicular products. The parafollicular cells you see
between the follicles are responsible for calcitonin production.
, Pituitary
Distinguish between the glandular anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis) and the neural posterior pituitary
(neurohypophysis). Locate, the anterior lobe, which produces GH, PRL, TSH, ACTH, FSH, and LH. Observe
the neuron axons that compose most of the posterior lobe. These neurons secrete ADH and oxytocin. Also,
note the pituicytes, which are randomly distributed among the neuron fibers.
