Assignment 2
, Question 1:
Country Predominant Predominant type HDI Percentage of
climate type of agriculture labour force
(subsistence or engaged in
commercial) agriculture
DRC Humid and Subsistence Low. Below 0.49 50% and more
tropical climates (below 49%)
with seasonal
humidity.
Mongolia Dry climate. To Subsistence Medium. 0.49- 20-49%
the North it is a 0.67
cold midlatitude (49-67%)
climate.
Germany Warm midlatitude Commercial Very high. Above 5% and below
climate. 0.79
(above 79%)
Uruguay Warm midlatitude Commercial Medium. 0.49- 5-19%
climate. 0.67
(49-67%).
Question 2:
2.1 Figure 5 is a qualitive map. This is said because it focuses on exactly where the commercial
farming is distributed and located in the world. A qualitive map shows nominal data such as what
type of commercial farming is done in what regions of the world.
Figure 6 used in the assignment are choropleth maps. This is because they use different colours and
shading to show information in the different areas. These colours and shadings represent varying
phenomenon’s in different areas.
2.2 Figure 5 clearly shows nominal data. Nominal data cannot be ranked as it is not a numeral but
merely a category. For example, figure 5 shows the different categories of commercial farming.
the information gathered from figure 6 shows ratio data. This is said because all the information is
numerical and the information we get from one area is different to the information in another area.
For example, the Human Development Index in African counties is different to the European
countries.
2.3
2.4 A small scale is used in figure 5 as it represents only small details over a huge area. For example,
the map only shows the boarders of the countries as it must show all this information of the entire
world.
2.5 Azimuthal projection is used for figure 5 as the earth’s features are placed onto a flat surface and
it projects all its features. The distances on the map between places are correct which adds a benefit
