 Waar geen vrije protonen voorhanden zijn, zullen negatieve nucleofielen zich gedragen als
een Lewisbase (elektronenpaar-donor) = nucleofiel ( Nu- : gaat zijn elektronenpaar (-)
afgeven) (Brönstedbase= protonacceptor)


 Vervangen groep is de leaving group of vluchtgroep

 Nucleofielen: H-, OH-, RO-, HS-, RS-, CN-, RCOO-, R2C-, R-MgBr+, RSH, ROR, ROH,
H2O, H3N
 Elektrofielen: H+, H3O+, R3C+, AlCl3
 Leaving groepen: I-, Br-, Cl-, F-, RCOO-, RO-




 Verloop:

 Breking σ-binding
 Nieuwe σ-binding
 Gelijktijdig of in opeenvolgende stappen (vorming van reactief intermediair)
 SN2-mechanisme (éénstapsreactie tussen 2 moleculen: bimoleculair)
 SN1-mechanisme (tweestapsreactie tussen telkens 1 molecuul: unimoleculair:
ontbinding + binding (sneller dan ontbinding))

 Het reagerend C-atoom kan een methyl, primair, secundair of tertiair koolstofatoom zijn


 Reactie verloopt in één stap


 Via transitietoestand:
 σ-binding naar aanvallend nucleofiel is gedeeltelijk gevormd
 de te breken σ-binding gedeeltelijk verzwakt


 Aanval gebeurt langs achterzijde, stereoselectief!


 Overige bindingen liggen in één vlak loodrecht op de as van de reactie


 Tijdelijke inwisseling sp3 naar sp2 (verlies tetraëderstructuur), om overlap te kunnen
maken met orbitalen van inkomende en vertrekkende atoomgroep


 Nadien: opnieuw tetragonale vorm (door repulsie), maar inversie heeft plaatsgevonden =
Waldeninversie




 Reactie van tweede orde: v=k⋅[Nu-][R-X]



 Gevolgen:
 Vertrekkende van 1 stereo-isomeer  slechts 1 ander stereo-isomeer
 Reactie is dus stereoselectief
