Question 1

1.1 Definition of inclusive pedagogy and its purpose in addressing learner diversity

Inclusive pedagogy refers to an approach to teaching that seeks to increase the
participation and learning of all learners, regardless of their abilities, backgrounds, learning
needs, languages, cultures, socioeconomic circumstances or other differences. It involves
creating teaching and learning opportunities that are accessible to a diverse range of
learners rather than designing education primarily around an assumed “average” learner
(Florian and Black-Hawkins, 2011). Inclusive pedagogy therefore recognises learner diversity
as a normal and valuable feature of the classroom.

The purpose of inclusive pedagogy is to remove barriers that prevent learners from
participating fully in education. Teachers adapt their teaching methods, resources,
classroom interactions and assessment practices to respond to different learner needs. This
approach is important because learners do not learn in identical ways or have the same
educational experiences. Inclusive pedagogy can therefore promote participation,
achievement, belonging and respect among learners (Ainscow, 2020).

1.2 Differences between inclusive pedagogy and traditional teaching approaches

Inclusive pedagogy differs from traditional teaching in several important ways. Traditional
approaches have often been associated with teacher-centred instruction, where the
teacher is viewed as the main source of knowledge and learners are expected to receive
information and demonstrate their understanding in relatively standardised ways. Inclusive
pedagogy, in contrast, places greater emphasis on learner participation and recognises
differences between learners as part of normal classroom diversity.
