Reflective Essay: 1. Provide a brief summary of your case scenario selected (setting the scene) and
discuss why you feel your case scenario is an ethical dilemma;
'On my Aged Care Practicum (first practicum of my nursing studies), I witnessed
physical and verbal abuse towards a resident. This carer had worked at this facility for
10 plus years and therefore was well known. Since being on my first practicum as a
nursing student I felt out of place to report such an act as I did not want to come
across as being 'trouble' for the staff at the aged care by reporting. However, I felt I
had a duty of care towards these residents, even though I was just a nursing student
there, I believed I needed to report this.

2. Briefly compare and contrast differences between moral and ethical reasoning
from your scenario;
- Define Moral Reasoning: Judgement based on personal standards of right and
wrong.
- Define Ethical Reasoning: Professional judgement based on standards, ethical
principles and codes
Morally, I believed that this is not right, however, I was afraid to report for fear of
judgment and being known as the student who is troublesome. Ethically, I knew deep
down this is wrong to do and I needed to follow the Nursing Standards of Ethics by
using ethical frameworks when making decisions.

3. Outline and apply specific ethical principles to your scenario that may assist in
guiding your subsequent nursing care.
- Autonomy- self determination
-Beneficence-do good
- Justice-treat fairly-give what is due or owed
- Veracity- be honest and tell the truth
- Accountability- accept responsibility
