Chapter 5: The Incident of the
Letter
🔎 Utterson goes to visit Dr Jekyll at his house but sees that he has
almost transformed. Jekyll promises Utterson that he won’t have
anything to do with Hyde any longer and he gives him a letter,
supposedly signed off by Hyde, which states that the police will be
unable to catch Hyde, intended to convince Utterson to cease his
investigations into Hyde.

“The doctor had bought the house from the heirs of a celebrated surgeon.”
The fact that Jekyll’s house previously belonged to a “surgeon” hints at
some key context surrounding body-snatchers in the Victorian era as it is
likely that the reason as to why there is a mysterious back door to Jekyll’s
house is because the surgeon would have been using is as a way of
secretly purchasing illegal corpses from body-snatchers.
The house is essentially a metaphor for the chaotic and split self given that
the house having a back door and front door indicates the contradiction
which Stevenson is trying to prove exists within man.
The laboratory is described as a “dingy, windowless structure”.
