Chapter 7: The Incident at the
Window
🔎 Utterson and Enfield see Jekyll when they’re on one of their Sunday
walks and call out to him from below his open window. However, his
face appears to transform before he gets a chance to reply to them,
leaving both Utterson and Enfield traumatised by the change they
witnessed in Jekyll.

“The court was very cool and a little damp, and full of premature twilight,
although the sky, high up overhead, was still bright with sunlight.”
The sky being “still bright with sunlight” could represent the hope that
Utterson and Enfield have for Jekyll’s recovery.
“like some disconsolate prisoner”
The simile “like some disconsolate prisoner” is used to describe Jekyll
sitting beside one of his windows, and also acts as an extended metaphor
for Jekyll being imprisoned not only inside his laboratory, but also inside his
and Hyde’s body, as well as Hyde being trapped within him.
