Chapter 9: Dr Lanyon’s
Narrative
🔎 Lanyon’s narrative reveals his side of the story: Jekyll gave him a set
of instructions without any explanation which he cannot write down
because they are so awful, and after he completed the tasks, he felt
that death was imminent. The last thing he assures Utterson of is that
the man who came to his house that night was Mr Hyde, describing
how he witnessed him transform back into Dr Jekyll.

“There was something abnormal and misbegotten in the very essence of the
creature that now faced me- something seizing, surprising, and revolting.”
The past participle adjective “misbegotten” uses the diction of the Nicene
creed, where it says that Jesus is “begotten, not made” to refer to how
Jesus is fully God, not just simply a creation of Him. As Hyde here is
described as “misbegotten”, this can be interpreted as him not being made
from God, but rather having a disreputable or improper origin, such as from
Satan. “Misbegotten” is also used to describe someone or something that is
despicable and contemptible, also showing how evil and despicable Hyde
is.
