Applied physiology – Overtraining
Overtraining is when you train too often without sufficient rest or you focus
too much of your training on one part of the body. This can lead to many
negative effects on the body.
Impact of overtraining:
Raised levels of cortisol and adrenaline – Cortisol is the hormone
associated with stress and lowing our blood pressure and adrenaline
is our fight or flight hormone. When our levels of these hormones are
high it can make it harder for our body to relax and for us to sleep
leading to extreme fatigue.
Insufficient rest days means our body doesn’t have enough time to
repair our muscles so these could lead to more muscle ache and
constant muscle soreness.
Overuse injuries are very common when overtraining
As well as hormonal imbalance causing issues with sleep, this will
also lead to mood changes such as increased anxiety and irritability.
Also a slight possibility of losing motivation.
Increase in chance of catching an illness.
In contrast to what many people may think overtraining is linked to
decreasing sporting performance and will hinder the progress that
could be made.
To avoid overtraining make sure to have sufficient rest days in our
workout and sporting plans as well as keeping it balanced
focusing alternately on both upper and lower body.
