Psychological Disorder - ANS-A persistent, harmful behavior pattern that is deviant,
distressful, dangerous, and/or dysfunctional.

UMAD - ANS-Guidelines for classifying mental illness: unjustifiable, maladaptive,
atypical, disturbing.

Unjustifiable - ANS-There is no obvious reason for the behavior in question.

Maladaptive - ANS-The person is handling stress or conflict in a harmful way to
themselves or others.

Atypical - ANS-The behavior is not something the populous at large does to cope with
stress.

Disturbing - ANS-The behavior must be something the average person would find as a
disturbing action.

DSM-5 - ANS-Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. APA's system of
classifying psychological disorders.

Does NOT explain the cause of the disorder or prescribe treatment. It simply identify
key symptoms.

Comorbidity - ANS-The presence of two or more disorders simultaneously.

Dorthea Dix - ANS-A huge pioneer in mental health and reform for asylums and
institutions.

David Rosenhan - ANS-Did a study in which healthy patients were admitted to
psychiatric hospitals and diagnosed with schizophrenia; showed that once you are
diagnosed with a disorder, the label, even when behavior indicates otherwise, it is hard
to overcome in a mental health setting.

Stress - ANS-The one underlying factor that links the category of each disorder.

Biopsychosocial Approach - ANS-Mental health issues are not the result of one
category or explanation (like behavioral, cognitive, etc.), but a combination of
influences.

Diathesis-Stress Approach - ANS-The theory that certain genetic factors predispose us
to having a higher risk of developing certain mental illnesses and that the mental
illnesses will then appear once the right type or level of stress from the environment
comes along to trigger the onset of mental illness symptoms.

Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders - ANS-Disorders that fall under this spectrum are
conditions that are either temporary or permanent, mild to severe forms of psychosis.

Psychosis (Psychotic) - ANS-A loss or inability to maintain grounded in reality.

Delusional Disorder - ANS-A psychotic disorder in which the primary symptom is one or
more pervasive and unrealistic delusions.

Brief Psychotic Disorder - ANS-A psychotic disorder characterized by a temporary loss
of reality that returns on its own, characterized by some kind of schizophrenic symptoms
and not better explained by drugs, depression, bi-polar disorder, etc.

Schizoaffective Disorder - ANS-Psychotic disorder showing the presence of both
schizophrenic and major mood disorder symptoms simultaneously.

Schizophrenia - ANS-A class of disorders characterized by disorganized and delusional
thinking, disturbed perceptions, and inappropriate emotions or actions.

Positive Symptoms of Schizophrenia - ANS-Symptoms present that are considered
abnormal (distorted thinking, hallucinations, delusions, innappropriate emotions).

Negative Symptoms of Schizophrenia - ANS-Symptoms of those whose absence are
considered abnormal (lack of voice tone, lack of emotions, lack of movement, interest in
activities, and speech).

Excessive Dopamine (Dopamine Hypothesis) - ANS-Influences learning, movement,
attention, and emotion. Too much may make it impossible for the brain to synthesize
logical thoughts well.
