AP Psychology Modules 9-12
Biological Psychology - ANS-The scientific study of the links between biological
(genetic, neural, hormonal) and psychological processes

Neuron - ANS-A nerve cell; the basic building block of the nervous system.

Dendrites - ANS-A neuron's bushy, branching extensions that receive messages and
conduct impulses toward the cell body. They "listen"

Axon - ANS-The neuron extension that passes messages through its branches to other
neurons or to muscles or glands. They "speak"

Myelin Sheath - ANS-A layer of fatty tissue segment-ally encasing the fibers of many
neurons; enables vastly greater transmission speed of neural impulses as the impulse
hops from one node to the next. Insulates axons and speeds their impulses.

Action Potential - ANS-A neural impulse; a brief electrical charge that travels down an
axon. Describes as an "all-or-none", since they either occur fully or they do not occur at
all.

Refractory Period - ANS-A period of inactivity after a neuron has fired.

Threshold - ANS-The level of stimulation required to trigger a neural impulse. Increasing
the level of stimulation above _________ will not increase the neural impulse's intensity.

"All-or-none" Response - ANS-A neuron's reaction of either firing (with a full-strength
response) or not firing. A strong stimulus can trigger more neurons to fire, and fire more
often.

Synapse - ANS-The junction between the axon tip of the sending neuron and the
dendrite or cell body of the receiving neuron.

Neurotransmitters - ANS-Chemical messengers that cross the synaptic gaps between
neurons. When released by the sending neuron, ______________ travel across the
synapse and bind to receptor sites on the receiving neuron, thereby influencing whether
that neuron will generate a neural impulse.

Reuptake - ANS-A neurotransmitter's re-absorption by the sending neuron. This
transmission is across a synapse.

Endorphins - ANS-"Morphine within" - natural, opiate-like neurotransmitters linked to
pain control and to pleasure. Helps explain good feelings.

Agonist - ANS-A molecule that, by binding to a receptor site, stimulates a response.

Antagonist - ANS-A molecule that, by binding to a receptor site, inhibits or blocks a
response.

Nervous System - ANS-The body's speedy, electro-chemical communication network,
consisting of all the nerve cells of the peripheral and central nervous systems. Made up
of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.

Central Nervous System (CNS) - ANS-The brain and spinal cord. "The body's decision
maker", "The control center"

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) - ANS-The sensory and motor neurons that connect
the central nervous system to the rest of the body. Gathers information and transmits
CNS decisions to other body parts.

Nerves - ANS-Bundled axons that form neural "cables" connecting the central nervous
system with muscles, glands, and sense organs.

Sensory (Afferent) Neurons - ANS-Neurons that carry incoming information from the
sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord. Carries messages for processing.

Motor (Efferent) Neurons - ANS-Neurons that carry outgoing information from the brain
and spinal cord to the muscles and glands.

Interneurons - ANS-Neurons within the brain and spinal cord that communicate
internally and intervene between the sensory inputs and motor outputs; where our
complexity resides.

Somatic Nervous System - ANS-The division of the peripheral nervous system that
controls the body's skeletal muscles
