GRADE 11 MATHEMATICS
Term 4 & Final Exam Study Notes
Main topics: Statistics • Probability • Trigonometry • Finance: Growth & Decay
How to use these notes: Learn the definitions and formulas first, then practise questions without looking at the
worked examples.
, 1. Statistics
Key terms
• Mean: Add all values and divide by the number of values.
• Median: The middle value after arranging data from smallest to largest.
• Mode: The value that occurs most often.
• Range: Highest value − lowest value.
• Quartiles: Q1 is the lower quartile, Q2 is the median, and Q3 is the upper quartile.
• IQR: Q3 − Q1. It measures the spread of the middle 50%.
Mean
Mean = Σx ÷ n
Example: 4, 6, 7, 9, 9 → mean = 35 ÷ 5 = 7.
Five-number summary
Minimum, Q1, Median (Q2), Q3, Maximum. These values are used to draw a box-and-whisker plot.
Spread and outliers
A larger range or IQR means the data is more spread out. An outlier is a value that is unusually far from the rest of the
data.
Exam tip: Always arrange the numbers before finding the median or quartiles.
