,HED4808 ASSIGNMENT 3 2026

DUE SEPTEMBER 2026

SECTION A

QUESTION 1

a) Early Childhood Development (ECD)
Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a comprehensive approach to policies and
programmes for children from birth to nine years. It refers to programmes and
interventions that support the continuing unfolding of children’s physical, emotional,
cognitive, social and spiritual capacities, shaped by interactions between the
environment, experience and genetics (Study Guide HED4808, 2024; Hurley, Yousafzai
& Lopez-Boo, 2016). In the South African context it spans birth to the start of formal
schooling (or up to nine years), while international literature often emphasises the first
two to three years.

b) Dominant/Western discourse
Dominant/Western discourse refers to the ideologies of those who wield power. These
ideologies are presented as the only universal truth to be embraced by all and strongly
influence policies and programmes globally (Study Guide HED4808, 2024). It privileges
developmental psychology, linear views of development and human-capital approaches,
often marginalising alternative ways of knowing (Moss, 2015; Ebrahim, 2012).

2

, c) Indigenous/local discourse
Indigenous/local discourse is a native way of knowing that resists the dominant
discourse as the sole valid knowledge system. It arises from the quest for indigenisation
of knowledge in the African context and argues that knowledge is context-specific yet
contributes to human wellbeing (Study Guide HED4808, 2024; Pence & Nsamenang,
2008).

d) Child agency
Child agency is the capacity of children to actively participate in matters that affect
them. Children are viewed as individuals who can determine what they want and take
control of their own lives (Study Guide HED4808, 2024; Ebrahim, 2011). It is closely
linked to Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child
(UNCRC, 1989).

e) Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP)
Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) is a child-centred approach to caregiving
and education that takes into account children’s developmental stages, needs and
cultural backgrounds. Activities are tailored to children’s capabilities. It originated as a
position statement of the National Association for the Education of Young Children
(NAEYC) and was influenced by developmental psychology theories (Bredekamp &
Copple, 2006; 2014; Study Guide HED4808, 2024).
