Newspapers
Newspapers are an older way of providing news. Newspapers are either tabloids or
broadsheets. They provide news, views and information of public interest. They do not
represent crime accurately. Tabloids tend to use large titles and pictures including persuasive
language mixing fact and emotion. Examples of tabloids are the daily mail and the mirror. On
the other hand, broadsheets tend to use smaller titles with more formal language and often
use statistics. An example of broadsheets is the guardian. Therefore, interpretations will
differ. Newspapers tend to sensationalise crimes to make the public more intrigued. They
over report crimes to make it seem like it is surrounding us when it may not be. They are
more likely to include celebrity storylines or those with a personal background to add shock,
emotion and personalisation, targeting more serious effects caused by crimes to create
scaremongers. Newspapers typically embellish and exaggerate certain areas. 43% of tabloid
readers thought that crime had increased when it in fact hadn’t. in real life, crimes do not
occur daily whereas in newspapers they’re reported daily.

Television
Around 20% of all television shows are crime related. Television present crime scenes, of
victims and offenders. They show victims as being olde and more middle class and reality tv
shows young offenders. Tv shows are either factual such as 24/7 in police custody and police
interceptors and some are fictional such as criminal minds and line of duty. It represents
crimes as more exaggerated than within real life. They often use edited versions of crimes,
and tend to portray it as more violent and unrealistic. Injuries are often underplayed to how
they would be in real life. Property crime is seen as being well organised and pre planned
when often in real life it is often a opportunist way of property crime. It often overplays the
value of houses being more than they are as well as how much was stolen. Typically, crime tv
uses stereotypical characteristics such as males often being offenders and victims are often
weak, powerless females. The police are often viewed as either showing an unrealistic
number of resources or viewed as being corrupt and don’t get the job done, unlike in real
life. Films show crimes as being an impossible representation of real life.

Films
Films tend to focus on the more sensational side of crimes. 1/5 of films in cinema are often
crime based. They do not represent crime accurately as they’re showed as occurring more
often than they do. Up to half have significant content of crime. Violence is often
exaggerated. In hitman’s bodyguard, they have many car chases which put the public at risk
when this isn’t allowed to happen in reality. The public were seen as reacting calm to over-
the-top things such as explosions and car theft. They tend to act accepting and unbothered
to high level crimes. In American heist, a severe bank robbery was presented and in real life
they are not regular occurrences. In this film, it was planned whereas in real life it is typically
spur of the moment. They’re presented as almost always successful which is unusual
compared to reality. In se7en, it shows serial killers being a massive issue in the number of
