AC2.2 evaluate the effectiveness of media used in campaigns for
change

Merchandise
This is often used to raise money and the profile of a group through advertising a
campaign for change logo/slogan. Some examples of merchandise which can be used
are water-bottles, bags/shopping bags, t-shirts and wristbands. A campaign that has
used merchandise is Comic Relief. Their focus is to raise awareness for the charity and
they do this by selling red noses. This instantly raises awareness because everybody
knows that the red noses are associated with Comic Relief. Over the past 30 years they
surpassed the £1 billion mark from donations and merchandise. Advantages of using
T-shirts for campaigns for change: T-shirts make great giveaways or they are bought
so they can help to raise funds for the campaign. A group all wearing the same T-shirt
design will attract people who want to know what you’re advertising. T-shirts are
popular, so when you print them, you’re producing an item anyone can wear.
Disadvantages: It’s hard to stand out from the crowd so it may be difficult to raise
awareness among people. T-shirts are not environmentally friendly. Some companies
however are taking measures to tackle it but it’s one of the most polluting items in the
world. In my opinion, I believe choosing t-shirts is an effective way to advertise a
campaign for change as it is a great giveaway for a prize draw and if they are bought
they can help to raise funds for the charity. However, I don't believe ethically it would be
great as the workers are getting paid 35p to make the t-shirts and not getting a decent
earning in return.

Social networking
This involves gaining attention through social media networks. Some examples of social
networks which can be used in campaigns for change are Instagram with 1 billion active
users, Twitter with 330 million active users, Facebook with 2.4 billion active users and
YouTube with 2 billion active users. The percentage of people in the UK that use
different social media networking sites are 56% for Facebook, 42% for Instagram and
40% for Twitter. Examples of campaigns for change which have used social networking
is the improve mental health campaign. An automated conversational agent ,Woebot,
was designed to monitor a users mood and then teach them coping mechanisms.
Merging technology and cognitive behavior therapy, the chatbot uses daily
conversations to ask people about their emotional state and things going on in their
lives. From these conversations, Woebot discusses mental health and wellness.
Another example is the Gender equality campaign. The ultimate goal of the campaign is
to have 20,000 women in technical roles by 2020 growing the representation of women
by 36%. As a result of the #Balancethe Equation hashtag and its GE-girls.com website,
the company has amassed thousands of retweets and comments.

Advantages of social media: If many people share the campaign through different
media platforms it could make the campaign go viral which could increase support.
