How do newspapers / news apps represent crime
News outlets convey crimes in numerous different ways. Crime is now seen as
entertainment so the more coverage news outlets get of particular crimes, such as
murder or knife crime the more ratings they receive. This is then more likely to be
reported in newspapers with them using language such as sensationalism to give their
story more attention and publicity.
How does films represent crime
Allen conducted research in1997 that showed that about a fifth of all cinema films are
crime related and half of them have significant crime content. The majority of film
contains elements of crime special effects, they often glorify crime to sell them.
Examples of films that glorify crime are Power, The Matrix and Scream.
How does tv represent crime
Tim Newburn found that in 1950, about 10% of TV shows were connected with crime.
Recent statistics have shown that this figure has since risen to 25%. Examples of TV
shows that have represented crime are Power, Making a Murderer and Prison Break.
Films exaggerate the reality of crime by focusing on unusual or rare crimes, the main
ones are drugs or murder.
How does electronic gaming represent crime
Electronic games such as GTA, Fortnite and Call of Duty all have an end goal or
purpose to kill the most people and be the last one standing. In order to complete this,
gamers fight, shoot and even kill which results in vast amounts of violence. This
violence is then rewarded for committing a crime. This can translate into real life, if a
person has committed an act of violence, they could have this false precept in their
mind that they are going to be rewarded.
