Hate crime AC1.1

This crime is commonly known as a hate crime. This type of crime involves a person who is
motivated by prejudice or hate based on a person’s race, religion, sexual orientation or in this
case disability. Typical victims of a hate crime is anyone based on their culture, race, religion
sex or disability. Usually the offenders of a hate crime are people who hold a prejudicial view
against a group of people or anybody who doesn’t believe in a certain person’s views and
decides to express it. The level of public awareness has started to increase as there has been a
high media focus. There has also been an increase in sentencing for assault from 6 months
imprisonment to 2 years as there has been a rise in awareness. A case study connected to hate
crime is a female was walking home when she was approached by two people who started
shouting abuse at her. She further reported them to the police. As a result the mother and son
was arrested and charged with racially aggravated public order offence. It is clear from the brief
that this crime is being committed as a hate crime as people are influenced by the media and
political viewsThus has led to a number of disabled people fearing to leave their own homes. It
is seen as criminal as a hate crime breaks the law. However it is seen as deviant as it goes
against the cultural norms of society.

Hate crime AC1.2

There are a number of different reasons why hate crimes are likely to go under reported such as
PERSONAL: could be that the victim such as Mrs Q being fearful of the consequences for
themselves or their family if they report the crime to the police such as being threatened or
attacked further. PERSONAL/SOCIAL: could be that the victim in this case Mrs Q may think
that the police will not be of any help to her and may not take the report of being racially
harassed seriously as she has not been attacked physically. This belief may be supported by
the stephen Laurence case, where the family felt the case was not taken seriously and was not
seen as an unprovoked racist attack as many of the police were racist themselves. .
PERSONAL: leading to people like Mrs Q not reporting a hate crime to the police could be
embarrassment, she may feel that she has been verbally abused and may just want to try and
forget about it .PERSONAL/SOCIAL: Finally, a lot of people may not know how to report a hate
crime. They wouldn’t know what number to dial or who to speak to, to report a minor crime for
example someone shouting abuse at them
