Honour crime AC1.1

One of the crimes covered in the brief is honour crime. This type of crime involves punishments
on people for acts deemed to have brought shame on their families. They involve acid attacks,
abductions, mutilations, beetings and murder. Also forced arranged marriage is connected to an
honour crime. Typical victims of an honour crime are young girls or homosexual young men
within a muslim family. Typical offenders of an honour crime is usually the male family members
for example the father, brother or uncle ( more usually from an asian background). The level of
public awareness of an honour crime is low. Often within an Asian community the attack is seen
as justified as the victim is as bringing dishonour on the family. This means it will often go under
reported. Case studies connected to this type of crime is Tulay Goren, who was only 15 when
she ran away in 1999. Even though her boyfriend was Turkish, he was 22 and from a different
branch of Islam. Her father Mr Goren was jailed for 22 years for strangling and then went on to
further murder her. It is clear this crime is being committed as an honour crime as young
women are being victimised for bringing shame on the family. It is seen as criminal as it breaks
the law. However, it is seen as deviant as it goes against mainstream norms of UK society.

Honour crime AC1.2

There are a number of reasons why honour crime goes under reported for example
fear. PERSONAL: They may fear reporting it to the police incase it happens to
themselves. If they see it happen to a family member or a friend, they are not going to
want to report it as it could lead to them bringing dishonour upon their family.
PERSONAL: Furthermore, another reason why someone wouldn’t report an honour
crime as they could be protecting the offender. They may be protecting their father or
brother so they don’t lose their loved one or because if they tell the police it could
happen to them. Moreover, a person may not report this crime as it’s part of their culture
and upbringing so they would deem it to be ok or wrong. PERSONAL/SOCIAL:Another
reason it goes under reported as the police might not take the enquiry seriously. The
police may feel that they don’t know the best way to handle this type of crime. Also if the
police were to handle it a certain way it could perceive them to come across as racist.
