Informatics and Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators
Hello, new nurses! My name is Christina Patterson. Today, I will be discussing
the importance of monitoring nursing-sensitive quality indicators, the impact these
indicators have on patients, how our organization collects and distributes this data, and
the crucial role that you, as nurses, play in reporting this information.
Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators
Let’s begin with the question, “What is the National Database of Nursing-
Sensitive Quality Indicators (NDNQI®)?” According to Hakami et al. (2023), the
NDNQI® is a standardized program developed by the American Nurses Association to

collect, track, and analyze nursing-related data. It provides healthcare organizations, like
ours, with a reliable way to measure nursing quality and patient safety outcomes across
different clinical settings. By analyzing this data nationally, organizations can compare
performance levels, identify trends, and implement evidence-based strategies to improve
care quality and nursing practice.
Next, let’s discuss what nursing-sensitive quality indicators (NSQIs) are. NSQIs
are measurable patient care outcomes that are directly influenced by nursing
interventions, staffing, and the nursing work environment (Hakami et al., 2023).
The NSQI I will be focusing on today is central line-associated bloodstream
infections (CLABSIs). Connor et al. (2023) note that this is a vital outcome indicator to
monitor because it demonstrates both the effectiveness of nursing practices and the safety
of invasive procedures. The authors explain that adherence to the central line
