Meaning/Concept of Physical Education
Physical Education is a combination of two words:
• Physical: Related to the body — strength, fitness, health, endurance, and
appearance.
• Education: Preparation for life.
Physical Education means systematic training of an individual using their
own body to achieve fitness, strength, and overall development.
Definition of Physical Education
• Jay B. Nash: "Physical Education is that phase of education which deals
with big muscle activities and related responses."
• Charles A. Bucher: "Physical Education is an integral part of education
aimed at improving human performance through selected physical
activities."
Aim of Physical Education
The main aim is the complete and balanced development of an individual
for healthy living and better sports performance.
Objectives of Physical Education
1. Physical Fitness and Health:
Develop physical fitness and healthy habits (sleep, exercise, diet).
2. Organ System Development:
Strengthen systems like respiratory, circulatory, digestive, nervous, and
muscular systems.
3. Neuro-Muscular Coordination:
Improve coordination between the nervous and muscular systems for
better balance and control.
4. Emotional Development:
Teach emotional control and stability — handling success, failure, anger,
jealousy, etc.
5. Social Development:
Build qualities like cooperation, teamwork, fair play, loyalty, and
sportsmanship.
6. Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem:
Boost self-worth, independence, assertiveness, and self-control.

Channelize surplus energy into positive activities through physical
