Introduction
Knowledge has emerged as a critical strategic resource for organisations operating in
technology-intensive industries, particularly where scientific expertise, data analytics,
artificial intelligence and continuous innovation are essential to value creation. Synapse
BioAnalytics operates within this knowledge-intensive environment, with its competitive
advantage relying heavily on specialised scientific expertise, proprietary algorithms,
research capabilities and collaboration across South Africa, Europe and North America.
However, the organisation’s rapid growth through acquisitions and international
partnerships has contributed to significant knowledge management challenges, including
fragmented information repositories, inconsistent documentation, isolated databases and
the risk of losing critical organisational expertise. The acquisition of NeuroVista Labs
illustrates that organisational expansion does not necessarily result in effective
knowledge integration, particularly when experienced scientists depart before their
expertise, research practices and institutional knowledge have been adequately
transferred. These challenges indicate that Synapse BioAnalytics needs to move beyond
treating information technology solely as an infrastructure concern and instead adopt an
integrated knowledge management approach that incorporates knowledge creation,
retention, sharing, organisational learning, digital technologies, governance and
regulatory compliance. This assessment critically examines the organisation’s knowledge
management challenges and proposes an integrated strategy aimed at improving
decision-making, innovation, collaboration and accountability while strengthening the
organisation’s capacity to achieve and sustain competitive advantage.
