Using Learning Theories and Frameworks for Teaching in ODeL

Introduction

Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) has become an important part of higher education

because it allows students to participate in learning without having to be in the same

physical classroom as their lecturers. Learning can take place from different locations

and at different times through platforms such as learning management systems, online

discussions, recorded lectures, electronic learning materials and digital assessments. This

flexibility makes ODeL particularly useful for students who have work commitments, live

far from educational institutions or have other responsibilities that make conventional

classroom attendance difficult (Moore & Kearsley, 2012).

The availability of technology, however, does not by itself guarantee successful learning.

An online course can contain many resources and still provide students with a poor

learning experience if those resources are not properly organised or connected to

suitable teaching strategies. Educators therefore need to understand how learners gain

knowledge, develop skills and make sense of new information. Learning theories are

useful in this regard because they provide different explanations of the learning process

and can guide decisions about teaching methods, learning activities, assessment and the

use of educational technologies (Schunk, 2020).

Different learning theories focus on different aspects of learning. Behaviourism

concentrates on observable behaviour and the role of reinforcement, whereas

, cognitivism is concerned with mental processes such as memory, attention and

information processing. Constructivism views learners as active participants who

develop knowledge through experience and interaction, while connectivism places

greater emphasis on learning through networks, technology and access to information

(Siemens, 2005). These perspectives can be particularly valuable when applied to the

ODeL environment, where students are expected to interact with content and

technology while often taking considerable responsibility for their own learning.

Learning theories also need to be translated into practical teaching and course-design

approaches. Instructional frameworks such as the Community of Inquiry, ADDIE,

Transactional Distance Theory and blended learning offer educators practical ways of

planning and supporting learning in distance and online environments (Garrison,

Anderson & Archer, 2000; Branch, 2009). Each framework addresses different aspects of

the ODeL experience, including interaction, course organisation, learner independence,

communication and the effective use of different learning modes.

This discussion explores the major learning theories and instructional frameworks that

can be used in ODeL. It considers what each approach contributes to online teaching, as

well as the challenges associated with using them. The theories and frameworks are also

applied to undergraduate business studies and postgraduate research methods

scenarios. The discussion demonstrates that effective ODeL is unlikely to depend on one

theoretical approach alone. Instead, lecturers need to select and combine approaches

according to the purpose of the course, the learning outcomes, the characteristics of the

students and the resources available to them.
