,NARRATIVE ESSAY
A narrative essay tells a story.
Consider the following when writing a narrative essay:
• The story doesn’t have to be true, but it must at least sound convincing.
• It is usually written in the past tense.
• The introduction should aim to hook the reader’s attention.
• A good story often makes a point.
• An unusual, even unexpected, ending gives the story a final touch or twist.
• Maintain your reader’s interest until the end.
• Remember, your reader knows only as much as you tell him.
DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY
A descriptive essay describes something – in detail.
Consider the following:
• Aim to create a vivid picture in your reader’s mind using words.
• Draw on the knowledge that your reader is a sensory creature: draw on sight,
hearing, taste, touch, smell.
• Ideally have experience of the topic. It is so much more convincing describing
something you have firsthand experience of.
• This is possibly the most difficult essay to write well.
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
The writer of an argumentative essay has a definite point of view and argues to
defend and motive his position on the topic.
Consider the following:
• Start the essay with your stance on the topic: Are you in agreement with or
strongly opposed to the statement?
• Give a range of intelligent and substantial arguments to support your view.
• Avoid generalisations and sweeping statements.
• Because an argumentative essay can be subjective and powerful, personal
opinions are expressed in vocabulary which is emotive but never vulgar.

,• End the essay with a strong message aimed to convince your reader of your
point of view.
• Example: Sex workers are also professional people and an asset to the
economy.
DISCURSIVE ESSAY
A discursive essay is objective and aims to give a balanced view of both sides
of an argument.
Example: Write an essay in which you give arguments for and against
abortion.
Consider the following:
• Work logically and deal with aspects of both sides of the topic systematically.
• Choose this essay only if you are well informed on the topic.
• Maintain your impartiality; your personal bias is not relevant.
• Well-reasoned and well-supported statements should be made.
• Tone is unemotional and convincing without being condescending.
• Only in the conclusion may you indicate a personal opinion.
REFLECTIVE ESSAY
A reflective essay may reminisce over a past experience or event or
contemplate an idea.
Examples of topics could be:
The purpose of life.
This is how I remember the best teacher I ever had.
Consider the following:
• The writing style is relatively informal and generally subjective.
• It lends itself to descriptions of thoughts, feelings, recollections of the past.
• Although the writer may expose his “inner being”, guard against clichés and
sentimentality.

, EXPOSITORY ESSAY
An expository essay is the result of research and presents facts in a logical,
systematic way.
Consider the following:
• A thorough knowledge of the topic or subject is required.
• Research precedes writing of the essay.
• Ideas must be organised logically and take the reader from the unknown to
the known.
• The essay is usually written in the present tense.
• Example: Explain the process of respiration.

,INTERPRETATION OF VISUAL STIMULI TEXTS (PICTURES)
A visual stimulus is a picture or an illustration that asks you to write an essay based
on what you see and the emotions that may be evoked. The purpose of the visual
stimulus is to get your creative mind working.
Features
• Your essay can be written in any style (i.e. narrative, descriptive,
argumentative, discursive or reflective) or a variety thereof.
• When responding to an essay with a visual, ask yourself the following
questions:
o What can you see in the images provided?
o What stands out in the image?
o What is the focus/main idea of the image?
o What thoughts come to mind?
o What feelings/emotions are evoked?
• Provide a suitable title for your essay.
• It is advisable not to merely describe the image/visual as a literal response to
the essay.
• You must always ensure that there is a link between your content and the
image/visual stimuli.
• Remember to use the Writing Process as a guideline when preparing and
presenting your response.
