Biology is the scientific study of life. 5 core themes unify all biological
study:
1. ORGANIZATION: Hierarchy of life from molecules to the
biosphere.
2. INFORMATION: Transmission and expression of genetic
material (DNA).
3. ENERGY & MATTER: Energy transformations and chemical
cycling.
4. INTERACTIONS: Biological feedback loops and system
networks.

THE HIERARCHY OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION
1. BIOSPHERE: All environments on Earth inhabited by life.
2. ECOSYSTEMS: All living things in a area along with non-living
components (soil, light).
3. COMMUNITIES: Array of organisms inhabiting a particular
ecosystem.
4. POPULATIONS: All individuals of a species living within a
specified area.
5. ORGANISMS: Individual living entities.
6. ORGANS & SYSTEMS: Body parts carrying out specific functions (e.g.,
leaves, heart).
7. TISSUES: Group of cells working together for a specialized function.
8. CELLS: Life's fundamental unit of structure and function.
