Scope - Answer Covers welding requirements for any type of welded steel construction with
the following exception.
- does not apply to pressure vessels or to structures governed by special codes such as Lloyds,
API, ASME or AWWA.
- does not cover stainless steel.
*Includes provisions for SMAW, SAW, GMAW, FCAW, MCAW, ESW (Electro Slag welding), EGW
(Electro Gas welding) and SW (stud welding) welding processes.

Administration - Answer All contractors performing work under this standard shall be certified
for welding fabrications when so stipulated in the governing design standard.
-In the absence of specific requirements in the governing design standard, the fabricator shall,
at the option of the engineer, either;
(a) Be certified under CSA W 47.1 or
(b) Provide evidence that he can produce the required welded fabrication to the engineer.

Welding Procedure Qualification - Answer The selection of the type of groove, the geometry
of preparation, the welding process and the related welding procedures shall be the
responsibility of the contractor's engineer and subject to the approval of the engineer.

adequately protected from the environment.

characteristics are not adversely affected.
-Surfaces and edges shall be smooth and uniform. Free from cracks, fins, scale, slag, rust, paint,
grease, moisture and other foreign material.

Performance Qualification Test Requirements - Answer There are no testing requirements but
because it is directly linked to Code CSA W47.1, most contractors who are fabricating to CSA
W59 are certified to CSA W 47.1.
CSA Standard W59 covers the welding requirements for what type of steel construction? -

alloy steel construction, except where other special codes such as those of the API, ASME, or
AWWA govern.

provisions that are applicable to statically loaded structures only and Clause 12 deals with
provisions that are applicable to cyclically-loaded structures only. The provisions of Clause 3 to
10 are applicable to all structures.
