Increasing availability, accessibility, and affordability of innovative therapies through

More and more of these type of drugs are coming onto the market, but some of them are also withdrawn
from the market due to the high costs and regulatory challenges. For a lot of companies, it is too expensive
to keep the drug on the market. Availability remains an issue.
Companies charge very high prices (often millions) to recoup R&D investments; governments negotiate
pricing (using public tax money).
Development focuses on more common diseases → rare diseases are underrepresented and often
unprofitable.
Collaboration is key to solving these issues.
Development phases in therapy development
Discovery phase -> pre-clinical research -> clinical phase 1,2,3 -> commercial approval -> post-
marketing surveillance.
Pharma companies typically handle the last two steps, designed for large-scale drugs. For rare diseases,
academia often drives research since industry shows less interest.

Cross-disciplinary collaborations are collaborations between different scientific disciplines. These collaborations
bring together the knowledge of laboratories, clinics, and companies to increase the effectiveness of research,
accelerate innovations, and improve patient care.
Roles
Laboratories: develop new technologies and conduct fundamental/translational research.
Clinics: carry out clinical studies and implement therapies.
Companies: scale up and commercialize innovations.
