Question 1

Mechanical and Electronic Means to Control Access in a Physical Security
Environment

Physical security is always the first line of defence in protecting an organisation's
assets, including information, people, and property. According to Blyth and Kovacich
(2006:129-130), besides the human element of physical access control, there are both
mechanical and electronic means to control access. These measures work together to
create a comprehensive physical security system that makes it difficult for intruders to
proceed beyond barriers and guides personnel to designated access points.

Mechanical Means to Control Access

1. Fences and Walls

Fences and walls serve as the primary physical barriers in a security environment.
These mechanical barriers range from chain-link fences topped with barbed wire to
concrete walls (Blyth & Kovacich, 2006:129). The primary purpose of these barriers is
twofold: first, they make it difficult for intruders to proceed beyond the perimeter, and
second, they guide personnel to designated entry points where access can be
controlled and monitored. The effectiveness of any mechanical barrier is measured by
the time required to circumvent it, which allows security personnel time to respond to
potential breaches (Hunter, 2001:30).

,2. Gates

Gates are installed to control physical access to specific areas, facilities, or buildings
(Blyth & Kovacich, 2006:129). These mechanical entry points may be staffed by security
guards who verify identities and authorisation before granting entry. Modern gates often
incorporate mechanical components that restrict access to one individual at a time,
preventing unauthorised individuals from following authorised personnel through the
entry point. The strategic placement and design of gates are crucial components of an
effective physical security plan.

3. Facility Design

The very design of a facility can serve as a physical access barrier (Blyth & Kovacich,
2006:129-130). Features such as areas without windows, bars on windows, and the
overall architectural layout can significantly impact the security of a facility. Strategic
facility design considers how the physical structure itself can contribute to access
control by limiting potential entry points and creating natural surveillance opportunities.

Electronic Means to Control Access

1. Badge Readers

Badge readers have grown significantly in popularity as an electronic means to control
physical access. According to Blyth and Kovacich (2006:129), these devices provide a
more foolproof physical access control method, usually at a much lower cost than
employing guards. The electronic badge reader may function in one of two ways: the
holder simply swipes the badge through the reader to gain access, or it may require the

, user to enter a group or personal identification number (PIN) in addition to the badge
swipe. This multi-factor authentication approach significantly enhances security.

Badge readers have become increasingly sophisticated, incorporating technologies
such as smart chips that store encrypted data, making it more difficult for unauthorised
individuals to duplicate access credentials. The electronic nature of these systems also
allows for comprehensive audit trails, recording who accessed which areas and at what
times.

2. Electronic Identification Systems

Beyond basic badge readers, more advanced electronic identification systems can
incorporate biometric technologies. These include fingerprint verification, iris analysis,
facial recognition, hand geometry, and voice analysis (Blyth & Kovacich, 2006:224-228).
Biometric systems operate by storing identifying information in a computer system to be
compared with information presented by a subject requesting access (Purpura,
2008:153). These systems indisputably link identification to a specific individual,
whereas keys, cards, and PINs may be used by unauthorised individuals posing as
someone else (Purpura, 2008:153).

Integration of Mechanical and Electronic Measures

The most effective physical security systems combine both mechanical and electronic
measures. As Hunter (2001:30) notes, the best physical security comes in layers. The
traditional four layers are: the site perimeter fence with a guardhouse at the point of
entry; controlled access to individual buildings; locked office doors; and a locked safe
