1.1.1 Two reasons for new elections:
- Hitler knew he lacked a majority in Reichstag
- Nazis wanted majority to rule unopposed without
coalition
1.1.2 Coalition Government = When two or more parties join together to form
government because no single party has enough seats to rule alone.
1.1.3 The Reichstag (German Parliament) was set on fire and burnt down on 27 Feb
1933.
1.1.4 Nazis used panic to their advantage:
- Blamed communists for the fire to create anti-communism
- Turned public against communists (their main opponents)
- Persuaded President to pass emergency decree suspending civil liberties (
speech, press, assembly)
- Police could search houses, confiscate property, detain indefinitely.
Concentration camps set up for 4000 communists.
