, Mokgethi's General Dealer: Technological Development, Demographic Change and
the Expansion of Mobile and Internet Connectivity in Africa
1. Introduction
The African business environment has undergone considerable transformation as a
consequence of technological innovation, demographic change, urban development and
changing patterns of consumer behaviour. These developments have created a business
environment in which even small, community-based enterprises are increasingly influenced
by forces extending beyond their immediate physical surroundings. Technological
advancement has become particularly significant because digital tools now influence how
businesses communicate with consumers, promote their products, process payments,
manage information and respond to changes in market demand. At the same time, Africa's
distinctive demographic characteristics, including its rapidly expanding population, large
youth demographic and increasing urbanisation, are creating new patterns of consumption
and new expectations regarding convenience and accessibility (United Nations, 2022).
Small retail businesses such as Mokgethi's General Dealer are therefore operating within
an environment that is substantially different from that of traditional retailing. The
conventional general dealer has historically depended primarily on a physical location,
personal interaction and relationships with customers within the surrounding community.
Although these characteristics remain important, the increasing availability of mobile
phones and internet-based services provides opportunities for small retailers to
complement their traditional operations with digital methods. A retailer can now
communicate with customers through mobile messaging, advertise products through social
media, accept electronic payments and potentially receive orders without requiring every
stage of the purchasing process to occur physically inside the shop (International
Telecommunication Union, 2024).
The significance of these developments extends beyond the simple introduction of new
technological devices. Technology can influence the efficiency of the entire business
system. Digital records can improve the monitoring of sales and stock, electronic payments
can increase transaction convenience, while digital marketing can enable a small business
to communicate with a relatively large number of potential customers at a comparatively low
cost. Digital platforms can also provide small businesses with access to information about
