Assignment 1, Part A
Patrice is a 20-year old woman who was adopted as a baby. She has met her birth mother, and a
birth sister, who live together nearby. Over the past two years, she has come to know them well,
and both her adoptive and birth families are on good terms with the other. Patrice is fascinated by
archaeology, and intends to study it at university.
The psychodynamic might wonder if she was exposed to archeology as a young child, perhaps
through books or if one her adoptive parents were archaeologists and it was ingrained in her mind
at a young age so subconsciously the interest was not her own to begin with. They might think her
adoption and curiosity about her own past had some connection with now having an interest in
historical studies.
The behaviorist will assume her surroundings have effected her in predictable ways and her
interest simply is a result of archaeologists in one side of the family. Every child is born with a blank
state so her interests are a result of something she was taught or exposed to and developed over
time. They would probably ask her if she had learned about it in school or had friends who were
also going into study it at university.
The cognitive psychologist would wonder what thoughts led her into such a choice. Was it an
innate desire which made her so interested in this topic? Was it because she was curious of her
ancestors past? Perhaps she has a certain fascination with historical artifacts. What has been her
experiences as an adopted child? What is her attitude like when it comes to study and university.
The humanist might think that she is so interested in studying archeology because of her desire
to learn more and become more then her parents have. Archeology might help her feel a sense of
fulfillment or purpose. They might wonder if she felt cared for and loved enough growing up or is
trying to prove herself. Perhaps she has certain needs as an individual which weren’t met growing
up and want to try and accomplish more then her parents/adopted parents did.
The social-cultural viewpoint will assess the surroundings she grew up in and what sort of culture
her family has. What sortof cultural values or social expectations did her family have? Was she
perhaps coerced into this by friends or teachers? Perhaps she felt she needed to conform to the
desires of her parents or teachers. Maybe her adoptive parents were archaeologists and the
grandparents as well so it was understood she would be too.
Assignment 1 Part B
Experiment
I have chosen to do an experiment with how much baking soda matters to the final product of
muffins. The aim of this experiment is to test how baking soda effects how much the muffins will
rise.
Hypothesis
The muffins will rise more with larger amounts of baking soda.
Variables
My independent variable is the baking soda and my dependent variable are the muffins.
