EDEXCEL A LEVEL GEOGRAPHY PAPER 3
PRACTICE TEST 2026 QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS GRADED A+

◉unconventional fossil fuels. Answer: Fracking

TAR SANDS( changed to oil sands to change the perception)

◉radical technologies. Answer: Hydrogen fuel cells
ADV:
-only waste product is water
-it doesn't emit any CO2, therefore not contributing to greenhouse
emissions and the enhanced greenhouse effect
-it is abundant and relatively cheap
DISADV:
-it can be hard to store and if not stored properly can be highly
explosive

,- there is a lack of hydrogen filling stations, and building new ones is
very expensive and therefore cannot be implemented on a large
scale.

carbon capture storage(CCS)
technology to capture CO2 that is emitted from coal-fired power
stations. Gas will be compressed, transported through pipelines and
injected as liquid into geological reservoirs.
eg. Norway has been using this method, however, it is very expensive
and cannot be implemented on a global scale. However, if used
globally could cut emissions by 9%.

EVs

◉Energy security countries. Answer: Energy security is dependent
on availability, accessibility, affordability and reliability.
Energy sources vary between countries( some rely more on
domestic sources, whereas others rely more on imports and foreign
sources.
Factors affecting per capita of energy consumption is dependent on:
availability, cost, standard of living, government priorities, public
perception of energy use, level of development( certain sources are
very expensive) and technology.

,Norway - HEP due to lots of precipitation, mountains and rivers. Has
access to deep sea drilling technology to extract oil and gas.
Norway uses 20% of gas, less than 1.5% of coal and 33.5% of oil.
Compared with the UK who uses 40% of gas, 15% of coal and 32.5%
of oil.
Norway is political stable, therefore government decisions are
unlikely to impact energy security.
Norway's energy has made them wealthier than the Uk due to
exporting energy and earning a revenue. They also do not rely on
imports, therefore allows them to maintain wealth.
Additionally, Norway has high capital investment which helps with
development of energy to keep up with the readily growing demand.

Russia- abundant resources due to large landmass containing many
resources. It is the second largest producer in the world and mainly
supplies energy for Europe. However, this has changed since Russia
invaded Ukraine.
Russia has shifted exports towards Asia, specifically China, who
requires high levels of energy to manufacture, produce and continue
to industrialise.

◉UK's energy security. Answer: The UK is less energy secure than
Norway as the UK is more reliant on non-renewable energy
resources which are finite whereas, Norway is moving towards more
sustainable sources of energy.

, The UK is trying to switch to nuclear power which is recycled energy
and is cleaner for the environment. Hinkley Point C is a new nuclear
power station that can provide energy for 6 million homes for the
next 60 years, however, there are concerns due to the past such as
Chernobyl and Fukushima, which has left fear about using nuclear
power.
The UK has reduced coal consumption due to the closure of mines
under Margret Thatcher's govt.
The UK has increased gas consumption due to better access to north
sea oil and gas, with the development of deep sea drilling technology.
The UK imports from Norway.
Energy in the UK is privatised means that overseas companies have
control over supply and demand for energy and can determine
prices. UK has political instability as the UK has 4 PMs in the past 4
years, leading to policy changes. However, this is ineffective as
policies take time to be implemented but by then the PM changes, so
there are no improvements in policy for energy security.
Due to Ukraine War UK stopped importing gas from Russia.
THe Uk has also increased renewable energy such as wing power. It
is placed in coastal areas, which receive the most wind, therefore it
is the most effective. However, it is unsightly and creates noise
pollution. This combined with NIMBY attitudes, they aren't
implemented on a larger scale in the UK.

Germany- heavily reliant on imports
