Distance is the total length of the actual path travelled. It is a scalar quantity and is always non-negative.
Solved Numerical 1
Question: A student walks 250 m east and then 150 m east. Find distance.
Solution: Distance = 250+150 = 400 m.

Question: A particle travels 5 m east, 4 m west and 7 m east.
Solution: Distance = 5+4+7 = 16 m.

Question: A runner completes 3 laps of a 400 m track.
Solution: Distance = 3×400 = 1200 m.

2. Displacement
Displacement is the change in position: Δx=x₂−x₁. It is a vector and can be positive, negative or zero.

Solution: Δx=10−2=+8 m.

Question: A body moves 15 m east and 6 m west.
