Introduction

Food insecurity remains a persistent global development challenge, affecting individuals’
ability to obtain sufficient, safe and nutritious food on a consistent basis. Although food
insecurity is often associated with inadequate food production, it is more accurately
understood as a multidimensional problem shaped by economic, social, political and
environmental conditions. The Food and Agriculture Organization et al. (2025) notes that
persistent food price inflation has weakened progress towards eliminating hunger,
particularly by reducing the purchasing power of low-income households and limiting their
ability to afford healthy diets. Furthermore, contemporary food insecurity is increasingly
influenced by interconnected shocks, including poverty, unemployment, armed conflict,
climate change, environmental degradation, market disruptions and unequal access to
productive resources. The World Bank (2026) identifies conflict and climate-related shocks
as major drivers of acute food insecurity, while rising input and food prices continue to place
additional pressure on vulnerable households. Importantly, these factors do not operate
independently; rather, they can reinforce one another, creating cycles of vulnerability in
which households with limited economic resources are less able to withstand environmental,
economic or political shocks. Consequently, addressing food insecurity requires more than
short-term food assistance and necessitates coordinated interventions that strengthen
livelihoods, improve agricultural productivity, enhance social protection and build resilient
and sustainable food systems. This discussion therefore critically analyses the major factors
contributing to food insecurity and evaluates strategies through which these underlying
causes can be ameliorated.
