Video 5: “Determining the Influence of Media on American Culture and Stereotypes”
Video 9: “Adding Mixed Numbers with Like and Unlike Denominators”
B1.
Cultural Needs:
In “Building Classroom Community Through the Study of Chinese Art and Culture”, the teacher
states that she provides an interest and learning styles inventory to see how each student best
engages with learning materials and lessons. In this video, I can see that the teacher based her
lesson on what the students were interested in. With one of the students taking a trip to India
to see family this gained curiosity of what other counties and cultures are like and with the
classroom’s partnership with the local university for International Passport Day, this allowed
them to have a fun way to explore other counties and cultures in class. The student’s cultural
needs are being shown in the classroom by students being in different groups all learning
different aspects of Chinese culture. Students are being exposed to Chinese architecture, history
and even China’s habitat for animals. Students are learning things like how Chinese children
learn to write with symbols and characters rather than letters like we use in America. Students
are learning the capitol of China and were able to take virtual tours through some of China’s
richest architecture.
Social Needs:
In “Determining the Influences of Media on American Culture and Stereotypes” I saw a group of
12th graders discussing reading material that was given to them the class before. Students were
able to share their thoughts and opinions on how Disney movies like “Aladdin” and “The Lion
King” portray deep rooted stereotypes about other countries and cultures that the
entertainment industry doesn’t try to change. The student’s social needs are being fulfilled in
the classroom with the discussion questions the teacher provided at the beginning of the class.
In the instructional materials the teacher states that she provides the discussion questions to
give the less vocal students the option to write down their responses and the more vocal
student driving questions to maintain a steady and productive discussion. The students were
also able to move the discussion to how the stereotypes in the movies don’t necessarily relate
to the world they currently live in. They were able to share how they have personally seen
stereotyping firsthand and relate to one another on how they don’t agree. One student was
