Service Line for Sexually Transmitted Disease Mobile Clinics

Proposed Nursing Service Idea

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] (2023), in 2021 in

the United States (U.S.), there was an increase in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs),

specifically chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, with approximately 1.6 million, 710 thousand,

and 177 thousand reported cases, respectively. Therefore, the proposed nursing service idea is to

establish a mobile clinic for STDs. The reason to establish this service for the population is to

allow for early diagnostic testing, prevention, education, and treatment of communities who are

at risk for STDs who are unable to get the medical help they need.

With the implementation of the mobile clinic, those who have low income or unable to

travel to a clinic in a certain geographical area will have healthcare access for any STD related

problems. In addition, the mobile clinic will be able to visit communities, schools, and

underserved societies. This provides greater possibilities to build strong patient-provider

relationships by maintaining a consistent presence within the communities. It also lays the

groundwork for patients to have increased trust in their healthcare providers (Singh et al., 2022).

This suggests there will be an increase in attendance of those affected with STDs. The clinic will

also be able to visit health fairs allowing the APRN (advanced practice registered nurse) and

RNs (registered nurses) to provide education to high-risk populations on STD prevention

strategies, health promotion, and safe sex practices. Per Malone et al. (2020), mobile clinics are

increasing health access by providing vital links between community and clinical facilities.

Therefore, mobile health clinics can become an integral part of providing STD care to vulnerable

and at-risk populations. Establishing this will be an innovative model of healthcare delivery.

The clinic will be staffed with an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), registered

nurses (RN), and a secretary. The APRN will possess effective leadership skills such as effective

communication, problem solving, delegation, time management, and commitment. The APRN

will communicate with organizations to form partnerships that can help fund and supply the

clinic. They will use critical thinking skills to prescribe, order diagnostic tests, and treat patients

with STDs seen in the clinic. Next, the RNs will use leadership skills such as accountability,

critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. These nurses will provide education, answer

questions, and perform labs and diagnostic services to those who visit the clinic. Lastly, the

secretary will use leadership skills of conflict resolution, time management, and effective

communication. Although they are not head of anyone, they can still use some of these skills.

They hold the clinic together by organizing paperwork, helping schedule appointments, and

answering calls with patients. The diversity of staff described will ensure that the clinic will run

smoothly and effectively by utilizing effective leadership skills in their everyday practice.

Importance

In the United States, there is a high occurrence of STD cases among young adults aged

15 to 24 years old (CDC, 2023). Therefore, the targeted population for the mobile clinic will be

these young adults. It is important that young adults are the focus as it could be due to the lack of

health literacy for STD prevention and available testing locations. Based on the data by Rusley et

al. (2022), the number of young adults who participated in risky behaviors such as condomless

sex with multiple partners had increased, which correlated to an increase in STD prevalence over

the 5-year trial. Consequently, those who leave STDs untreated can develop health problems

such as long-term pelvic or abdominal pain, infertility, pregnancy complications, and are at

increased risk of contracting or passing on HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) (CDC, 2023).
