I think that we should individually strive to eliminate this wealth imbalance. This is highly
not okay to be having such a rich/wealthier individual, while lives of many suffer in poverty.
The rich people or capitalists have enough wealth that they can share with half of the
poorer population if not more.
Principle 1 - Greatest Equal Liberty
Every human being has the right to basic liberties since this principle refers to the basic human
rights for example, the right to freedom of speech or right to vote. But this principle is mainly
focused on distribution of equal right, equal freedom. Everyone has a right to be wealthy
without being questioned about being too wealthy because these people acquired this wealth
by labor or an idea. In South African this principle has been applied when the government
implemented basic human rights bill which includes the right to life, education, shelter and
sanitation. The fact that one out of five people in South Africa live below poverty line shows
that income inequality that still exist in our country. I believe that if principle were to be
followed, no one would be living below the food poverty line, therefore this principle has
failed in these circumstances. Rawls believes that wealth should be equally distributed
where each and every member of the society benefits. I can make an example of the latest
crisis of Coronavirus pandemic, everyone was given social relief grants as to greatest equal,
this grant was distributed equally to everyone despite of their sex, ethnicity, religion and
status.
Principle 2a –Equality of Fair Opportunity
Equality of Fair opportunity provides that everyone has a fair and equal opportunity to
compete for both desirable public or private offices and positions. This means that society
must provide all citizens with the basic means necessary to participate in such competition,
including proper education and health care. Equal opportunity are the greatest benefit of
the least advantaged members of the society. Equality of opportunity is something we
should all strive for and is extremely hard to do, however. For example, if you grow up in a
family with a low socio-economic status, your chances of making it to the top regardless of
legal equality of opportunities. Everyone must have a fair treatment in the sense of equal
opportunities to become whatever they want in life or business.
