the electron. The path of an electron beam is observed on a screen.

The horizontal plates have a vertical separation of 5.0 cm.
A potential difference of 147 V is applied across the plates, creating a uniform
electric field between them.
A value for the speed of the electrons is required. To measure this value, a uniform
magnetic field is now applied between the plates and is adjusted until the electron
beam is undeflected. This magnetic field is directed out of the page.
The speed of the electrons is 9.6 × 106 m s−1.
