• Add 5 drops of 1-bromobutane to a test tube containing 5 cm3 of ethanol.
• Place the test tube in a water bath at 50 °C
• Place a second test tube containing 5 cm3 of an aqueous solution of silver nitrate in
the water bath.
• After 1 minute add the silver nitrate to the mixture of 1-bromobutane and ethanol
and start a timer.
• Record the time taken for a precipitate to appear in the test tube.
