INTRODUCTION

The questions and answers in this booklet are written in a learner-friendly way to help
learners prepare for English First Additional Language Paper 2. The focus is on helping
learners read extracts carefully, understand what each question asks and answer in clear,
focused sentences.
This booklet does not replace the original novel, classroom teaching or past examination
practice. Learners should still read the prescribed text and use these questions as revision
and exam preparation support.
The questions are based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll

Chapter 1: Story of the Door

In Chapter 1, Mr Enfield tells Mr Utterson how
Mr Hyde trampled a young girl and showed no
remorse. Hyde pays compensation with a cheque
connected to Dr Jekyll. The chapter introduces
Hyde, the strange door, secrecy, violence and
the mystery around Hyde’s connection to Jekyll.

The time and place where this extract is set.
The extract is set in Mr Utterson’s home, in front of the fireplace. It takes place after Dr
Jekyll gives Utterson a letter and after Utterson hears about Sir Carew’s murder. Utterson
asks Mr Guest to examine the handwriting.
