WEEK 2 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT
INSTRUCTIONS

Annotated Bibliography
Overview
The primary focus of this assignment is the creation of an annotated bibliography. However, it is
important to see the pathology of your work. Developing the research topic and dissecting the
literature are all part of understanding how to develop your annotated bibliography. In the
previous week, you proposed a project topic and began working on your research topic template
and using a research organization tool to track literature. As part of this assignment, you will
finalize these two documents and include them in your submission.
Preparation
Be sure to carefully read through the following resources to ensure your understanding of
annotated bibliographies and how to evaluate the quality of your sources:
Annotated BibliographyLinks to an external site..
Psychology PhD Library Research Guide: Source Quality.Links to an external site.
Review any feedback received from the discussion activity this week before submitting the final
version of your annotated bibliography.
Assignment Instructions
Include the following as individual documents in your assignment submission:
Research Topic Template
You began working on this template in Week 1. Check that the template has all sections filled
out and that the topic has been narrowed as much as possible. Your topic should include
concepts and a population.
Research Organization Tool
At this point, it should include 5-10 empirical research articles. You have a choice to create a
literature map as outlined in the course text or use the research organization tool provided
through the Library's Staying Organized & Keeping Track: Research ToolsLinks to an external
site. page.
Annotated Bibliography
Number each source.
Include a minimum of 10 empirical research sources.

, Apply current APA formatting. Each annotation should include the citation of the source, just as
it would appear in the reference list.
• Identify the journal's impact factor (see Source QualityLinks to an external site.) (This
means how a journal measures how often its articles are cited in other research,
calculated based on citations received in the last two years divided by the total number
of articles published in that time. You can find a journal's impact factor on its
homepage or through the Journal Citation Reports tool.)
• Identify the research question.
• Identify the research problem that the author or authors hoped to resolve.
• Identify the methods the authors used to investigate the research question.
• Provide a summary of the findings.
• Evaluate the work.

You can do this by addressing arguments and counterarguments from the research and discussing
the value that the research has for the field-how it advances the knowledge base. Also, consider
the strengths and areas where the research could expand.
Finally, discuss how the study supports your research topic.
Identify whether you chose the article for its usefulness in terms of method, content, or both
method and content, and why.
Additional Requirements
Not submitting the research topic template and research organization tool will result in a 10-point
reduction.
You may have more than 10 sources for this assignment; however, it cannot be fewer than 10.
The literature review assignment will require a minimum of 20 sources because you will need to
include theoretical research sources.
The annotated bibliography component should be 6-8 pages, including the cover page.
APA Style and Format: Use current APA style and formatting. Refer to Academic WriterLinks
to an external site. or Evidence and APALinks to an external site. in the Capella Writing Center.
Communication: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and respectful of the
diversity, dignity, and integrity of others, consistent with expectations for members of the human
services profession. Written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall
message.
Competencies Measured
By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the
following course competencies and scoring guide criteria:
Competency 1: Determine the scientific merit of the professional literature.
Identify the source of the article as a peer-reviewed journal article reporting research.
Restate the research question in the article.
