Abstract
For any athlete that is going to compete they need to be well rounded, by that I mean they
need to be physically strong and mentally strong. The mental aspect, or Psychological Training,
is just as important as Physical Training for their given sport. There are many different types of
Psychological Training so to make a plan for an athlete it is important to know the needs of the
athlete, where they need to improve, and what weaknesses they have to improve upon. In this
example I chosen a Weightlifting athlete preparing for a competition to demonstrate how can I
develop a plan for their needs.
Psychological Skills Training: Weightlifting Athlete
The athlete I will be evaluating is a weightlifting athlete that is preparing for a
competition. Weightlifting is a standalone sport in the Olympics, local events, and the
movements are also apart of CrossFit. This sport is for anyone, from young to old from men to
woman. This is a very demanding sport that requires the athletes to train hard and often focusing
of specific movements with accompanying accessory movements. In this example my athlete is a
34-year-old male, with a family, full-time teacher, and veteran with PTSD. He uses his
weightlifting exercises to strengthen his body, let off steam, and stay active; he is passionate
about the sport and has decided to compete in his first Weightlifting competition.
Stage One:
First aspect is to determine the mental and physical condition of athletes. To get to know
his strengths and weaknesses, I'll send him a questionnaire with basic questions; I'll have a few
discussions and experiences with him. With respect to financial, technical and family wise, I will
go over his life satisfaction. I'll also go over how he views his social acceptance, his actions
while he's practicing, how much of a performer he's and I'll take his physical appearance into
