Types of research

Qualitative- This research relies on data obtained by the researcher from first-hand
observation, interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, participant-observation, recordings
made in natural settings, documents, and artifacts. Penglais uses qualitative research when
conducting first hand observations of the school.

Quantitative- Quantitative research involves the process of objectively collecting and
analysing numerical data to describe, predict, or control variables of interest. The goals
of quantitative research are to test causal relationships between variables, make
predictions, and generalize results to wider populations. Penglais uses quantitative data
when analysing questionaries producing figures.

Primary internal- Primary research is the gathering of new or 'first-hand' data specifically
tailored to provide information on school’s own services. Internal research means that the
information will be collected from internally within the school. Penglais uses this when
conducting surveys among the staff and students.

Primary external- Primary research that is external is gathering information that is not found
within the school. An example of this would be Penglais sending out questionaries to
parents in order to gather their opinions. This would be primary research that is external.

Secondary internal - Secondary research involves the summary, collation or synthesis of
existing research. Penglais uses internal secondary research when collecting data from
previous questionaries/ surveys done in order to gain knowledge of previous research done
within the school.

Secondary external-Secondary research that is external means collecting data that already
exists outside of the school. Penglais does this by analysing research of other schools in the
local area to see what they are doing to improve their school. Penglais school can then
analyse this data which is external and use it as a guide to help them improve.

The research helps reduce risk of decision making as there is more data too back up the
decision that is being made. There has already been research done about the decision and it
will be evident whether the decision that is being made is more likely to be a success or
failure. Having the evidence to back up their proposal significantly decreases the risk that
comes with decision making.

The research taken will be measured over a certain period of time. It is important that the
length of time the research has taken is noted as this will be a key factor. There will be a
certain time from for example a week, research will be conducted for that week and will
give a fairly accurate and reliable result. It is important that no major events happen in that
week in order to keep the research as accurate as it can be.

, Market research helps with the marketing planning of Penglais as it gives the school a brief
outline of what needs to be done and what people want done. It helps pin point the areas
where people most want to see change. Conducting market research Is important within
Penglais so that everyone gets a say in what they want to see next and so Penglais can
better please everyone. If they don’t conduct market research they will not know what
people want and what they’re is a high demand for. It is important that pupils and staff have
a voice and so the school is a nicer environment for everyone. If someone wants a change
they’re voice will be heard through the marketing research of Penglais. It is easier for the
school to plan ahead when they have done correct market research.
